Entrepreneurship

In starting my career out of college I feel that I most fit with being a businessperson. As much as I like the ideas of an entrepreneur, I want to be able to demonstrate my skill sets first in safe environment. I also think at the moment not having family and being young I am able to put a lot of time into a job and gain recognition for my hard work. In my field of Environmental Science the whole field itself is a new idea compared to many fields, so any company that I get involved it is going to be something different then most companies. In this way I see myself as a businessman in an entrepreneur world. My employer is going to be the entrepreneur taking the majority of the risks and it will be me that makes sure it works. Working in this environment almost gives me the reality of both worlds and in the long run will help me decide it which way I would like to take my career. Either stay a businessman or spread my wings and take what I have learned and become an entrepreneur. I hope it is the entrepreneur direction that I choose. I mention in my Personal Development Plan that I want to start my own GIS Company this is the real point in my life when I need to decide between remaining a businessman or become an entrepreneur, this all depends on what advancements are made prior to this point. There may already be businesses like mine that I would have to compete with which would mean I would stay a businessman, but if I able to make my company different in its own way it will allow me to be an entrepreneur.

Lean Process

While implementing the 5S process to my bedroom one thing that was noticed that a lot of the clothes on my floor where clean. But because of the foot traffic in my room they became dirty and had to be washed again. Sometimes these clothes may have been washed three times before I wore them again which is very wasteful. There are often times too when I will wear something once and then wash it were the shirt or pants might not even need to be washed.

To stop this waste a lean system can be used. First identifying the waste, which is washing clothes that don't need to be washed. Now developing a plan, by keeping clothes in their correct spot dirty and clean clothes can distinguished from each other. While changing clothes check to see if pants or shirts really do need to be washed. If they do take to the laundry room and if they don't place in their correct spot. Over time this will become a simple task and become even more efficient. As I become more efficient with the process more time will be saved that will allow for further improvements in keeping my room waste free.

5S Process

After a few years in college I lost my room back home. Now that I live back at home my room now is the guest room/baby room/ironing room. As I slowly took over the room I never really organized or used the whole room very well, especially the dresser or closet.  I thought this would be a perfect reason to finally make order of my room using the 5S process.

1. Sorting (Seiri)
To start it of I sorted through all my clothes scattered throughout the room and tossed dirty clothes in the laundry and clean clothes I decides whether to put in dresser or hang in the closet. My nicer shirts and sweatshirts I put in the closet and the rest in the dresser.

2.Straightening or setting in order (Seiton)
While I was putting clean clothes away in the dresser I placed like things in the same drawer like play shirts in one and good shirt in another.

3. Sweeping or Shinning or Cleanliness (Seiso)
I did something then my mom never knew I could do, I vacuumed and made my bed. Vacuuming really made the room seem a lot cleaner since there was serial from my niece all around the crib.\

4. Standardizing (Seiketsu)
This step is going to be the hard part, I am going to have to make every day the same or deal with laundry and cleanliness the same way. When laundry is being put away put it in the correct drawer or in the closet not on the bed or the floor. I know what I have to do to maintain my room.

5. Sustaining the discipline or self-discipline (Shitsuke)
Much like above I am going to have to be discipline so that I don't slip and let my room turn back into what it was. Also if I find a way to make my room better I use the previous 4 steps to apply it.

6. Safety
My putting the iron and ironing board away I made my room much safer for my nieces and nephews. The iron sat on the board with the cord hanging down where one of them could have grabbed it and pulled the iron down on top of them.

7. Security
Not noticeable in the picture but when I change my clothes I empty my pockets and pile coins and small bills on the table by my TV. When I cleaned there was about ten dollars laying there, I picked that up and a got safer more secure place to save my change.

8. Satisfaction
After completing the 5S process I was very satisfied with my room and most importantly my mom was satisfied.

Quality Management

In the environmental field especially in my interest, restoration, "adaptive management plan" is used. The adaptive management plan is a continuous cycle that will involves planing, monitoring, analyzing, adapting, and sharing.
The process begins with assessing the problem and creating objectives and goals. Next is planning and designing, what strategies are going to be taken to solve problem. Then implement these these strategies to the problem. Now it is monitoring, observing that your strategies are being used. Next it is time evaluate and analyze, did the strategies used achieve the objectives and goals. Finally adapting the plan to achieve any of the objectives and goals that weren't met.

Bass Pro Shop in Green Bay

Some of you have probably heard about the Bass Pro Shop that was nearly put up in Green Bay. The land that was to be developed was financed by local business men and the project was ready to take off. It was looking great for the city, jobs were going to be made and many of the laid off construction workers were finally going to get to work. There was a problem however. The land that was to be developed was wetland. As soon as Bass Pro Shop found out about the wetland issue the immediately decided against building in Green Bay (1). Governor Walker pushed the development and to fill the wetland to get Bass Pro Shops in Green Bay. Mitigation area was planned to deal with the wetland issuer (2).

So this development was going to increase employment and restore wetlands in other areas. That sounds very good to must people, but that wetland was the home to many species including the leopard frog and the wetland is located near the main highway. The wetland is filter to the run off from the highway, cleaning and preventing any flooding.

Is it ethical to fill the wetland to create jobs or is it unethical to fill the wetland and destroy it natural habitat? I feel that Bass Pro Shops did the right thing by backing out of the development. Wetlands are the earths natural water purifier. Wetlands are  the product of 100 of years of natural development.

Wood Project

Our group is working on the wood project. Are issue is using a phenol based wood treatment.  We have been in contact with the inventor of this phenol based treatment, Joe Starks. We want to decide if this new treatment is actually better than what there is on the market today. Is the price going to be to expensive so people will not use it, what the shelf life of the product might be, and if the treatment is safe.

We have split up the work within the group and everyone knows their role. I am going to get in contact with Menards to ask a few questions on their products trying to finds some prices, shelf-life, and how much they sell.

Doctor Accepting Tickets

In the situation given that a physician is accepting Wild tickets from a pharmeceutical rep it isn't really said if the physician is using the reps drugs. To me I do not see this as unethical, being a sales rep you are not just selling a product but you are also selling yourself. Give the physician these tickets to me seems like there is really no huge difference between this deal and one you would see in a super market. The owner of the market may be giving away prizes to get the customers in the store. Just because the physician accepting Wild tickets is on a larger scale the rep and market owner have the same intentions.

Physician are seeing pharmeceutical reps on regular bases, all selling in some standpoint the same drug. The rep has to do something to make themselves stand out above the rest of the reps the physician is seeing.

Diversity

To me diversity is putting more variety into a subject. That subject may be your backyard, friends, workplace, etc.  By having diversity in your life it is going to able you to be more open to new adventures. I come from a real small town where there is little to no diversity. Everyone had the same interests and mostly the same hobbies, most days were the same as the day before and the next. With this limited diversity it was strange for me to try new things because it was out of the norm and my comfort level. For an example, my girlfriend comes from a large town filled with diversity. The first time I went to here hometown I felt akward because it was so different. Even when it came to chosing a place to eat there was such a variety of choices I chose the place that I was familiar with.
I know diverisity is important and a huge role in the work force today. I do want to start my own business some day and the more diverse my costumers are is going to make an impact on how diverse in need my employees to be. Like stated in class the smartest and most qualified applicant is not always the right choice for the position.

MY PDP

Mission: My mission is to have a happy, rewarding life, with a great family and a successful career.

Goals:
1. Graduate from UW-Stout
2. Begin my GIS career with Merjent Inc. or MI-Tech.
3. Advance in the company to a point were I can settle down and begin my family
4. Become financially set and start my own GIS company specializing in wildlife and farmland.
5. Make enough money so that my children will not have the burden of paying for college.
6. Retire, but remain doing freelance GIS, moving out west to the mountains.

Strategy:
With this being my last semester I will be graduating in December, 2011. At the moment I have no job line up. I will take this time to work for Century Fence Company, where I have worked the past couple summers. By doing this I will remain financially stable while I continue to search for a career in my field. Through a tremendous amount of networking, labor work, time, and training, I will get my chance to become a GIS specialist for Merjent Inc. I am already very close with the Vice President of the company and I have had interviews with him and feel extremely confident. Being very great company in the Midwest right now and quickly spreading throughout the US possibilities for me to advance are spectacular. Through hard work and dedication to the company I will be given that opportunity and will be able to select my location and place roots to start my family.

With a growing company on my side and the years of hard work will pay off extremely when I can start my own adventure. With all my training, experience, and recognition, I will be able to start my own GIS company to work with my first passion the outdoors. Working with farmers, sportsmen, and the general outdoor enthusiasts, I want to create maps that illustrates the part of the outdoors that most people don't see.

Something that is very important to me because it was such an important thing in my life is to be able to put my kids through college just as my father did. By instilling the dedication of hard work into me and my brothers we were able to work hard and never had the burden of financial issues. By teaching my kids these lessons they will also have that freedom from the financial struggle through college.

With a Happy Life in progress and many years of hard work I will retire. Move to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. This is area that I have hunted for years and will continue my life there. By remaining to do GIS work for ranchers, mapping fence lines, feed lots, and herding areas, I will prevent boredom and driving my wife crazy.

Values:
Through this PDP these values show there importance to me and my life ahead.
1. Family
2. Friends
3. Happiness
4. Environment/Outdoors
5. Financial stability

CO2 presentation

https://docs.google.com/present/edit?id=0ASHoGSKZDyhKZGhxNnQ3NXZfMzlkeDU5NjRnZw&hl=en_US

The criteria chosen in class where very broad I believe, allowing there to be no clear understanding. I'm not sure what criteria would have been better but we should have made the two criteria established a little bit more concrete.

After the penny presentation disaster I would say these presentation when much better. However, just like the penny presentations there was a lot of repeat information. More calabiration between the groups would have been a great idea so that all the facts and criteria were touched upon not just the stand out ones that everyone commented on.

A huge part of our group was Don, being a very well spoken and a confident speaker abled him to really change some thoughts on the paper.  Organization wise we were on top of it. Using "gmail", something new to me we were able to work on the presentation as a group even when we weren't able to meet as a group.

As the days went on and the more I looked at the paper there were times when I was against the paper. But for some reason after listening to the presentations I still voted for the "yes" groups to win. I thought I was voting that way just because I was yes, but every "no" group argued the same thing and that was the tables and figures.

I'm not sure what is meant by the question if the class made the right decision on the debate.  The question almost sounds like we were debating the topic the of CO2 and global warming, but that was not the debate. Though it was very hard not jump ship and bring that topic up while debating if the paper was legitment.

With othere countries growing and becoming more advanced with industry, it will soon be that the U.S will have little affect on global warming compared to other parts of the world.

What do as individauls makes the difference in global warming. It us the that decide how much is enough. We control how much CO2 is released and we decide if we really are ready to make the difference to prevent any more global warming influences.

What would the penny weigh

This link will take you the presentation my group presented on what a penny would weigh if you were to pick it up of the sidewalk.
https://sn2prd0102.outlook.com/owa/attachment.ashx?attach=1&id=RgAAAACYE0kU7GTgSYfs9ZmWkTyHBwAgQ2lalGT6Rpfk3xqL%2f6F9AAAAAE2XAADczGzZlBCLSLAYUcOKn9OLAAAB4V0oAAAJ&attid0=BAAAAAAA&attcnt=1

To reflect back on our presentation I would definitely say that more time could have been spent on it. The presentation really lacked any effort, we met one day and split up the work. We ended up having duplicated information which caused to really stumble through the presentation. Overall our presentation was not something that this caliber of students should be doing.

I believe for all the groups, even though there was a winner, non were up to par. More scientific research should have been done using the skills of the class to give more persuasive information.

Professional Development Plan

A professional development plan (PDP) for APSC-311 would contain much of the same items as for a company. A description of the course to give the general information of the course. The description of the course will give a the overall mission that will be accomplished during the course period. Next, we would want to discuss goals and explain how this mission will be achieved. What we plan on doing to reach these goals needs to be discussed next. To reach theses goals we need to set up the steps that need to be taken. For each step there needs to be an objective that should be accomplished and by setting a time-line for when each objective needs to be made by will keep us on track to achieve the goals.

There then has to be a self reflection to summerize what we have learned and done to see if we did in fact accomplish our mission.
